Alucard is a Fighter/Assassin who converts short skill casts into repeated dashing Basic Attacks. He is strongest when the enemy draft lacks reliable suppression and when he can enter after the first crowd-control wave, activate Fission Wave, and stay close enough to heal through the fight. The current top-five Pro Setup sample is remarkably consistent: War Axe, Flame Hunter's Tough Boots, Endless Battle, Blade of Despair, Queen's Wings, and Malefic Roar form the dominant sustain-and-penetration shell.

Quick Answer: How Should You Build and Play Alucard?

Take Whirling Smash at level 1, prioritize it, keep Groundsplitter as the backup upgrade, and level Fission Wave whenever available. For jungle, use Assassin Emblem with Thrill, Seasoned Hunter, and Temporal Reign plus Retribution upgraded to Flame Retribution. Alternate each skill with the Pursuit Basic Attack instead of dumping every cooldown at once.

  • Pick Alucard when: allied control can start the fight and the enemy cannot lock him down through the lifesteal window.
  • Avoid or adapt when: Franco, Johnson, Fredrinn, or layered burst can stop or outlast the first entry.
  • Default rule: enter second, tag heroes with Fission Wave, weave Basic Attacks between skills, and save the second ultimate cast until it finishes a target or the window is ending.
Client context: English package version 2.1.88.12027. Alucard Skills: Mechanics and Decisions

Pursuit skill iconPursuit

After every skill, Alucard's next Basic Attack dashes to the target and deals Physical Damage. The Demon Hunter clause adds 10% damage to Creeps.

Pursuit in-game demonstration
Pursuit replay captured from the English client on August 3, 2026.
Use it when

a skill has just created a safe path to the same target

Why it works

the passive dash reconnects Alucard after short movement and rewards alternating skills with Basic Attacks

Do not

Do not spam two skills before using the empowered Basic Attack unless survival requires it

Groundsplitter skill iconGroundsplitter

Alucard rolls to a location, slams the ground, deals Physical Damage, and slows enemies by 40% for two seconds.

Groundsplitter in-game demonstration
Groundsplitter replay captured from the English client on August 3, 2026.
Use it when

you need to cross a wall, close distance, or slow a target before the passive dash

Why it works

mobility plus slow makes the next Basic Attack easier to land and starts the laning combo

Do not

Do not use it as the only way into a five-player formation without a retreat path

Whirling Smash skill iconWhirling Smash

Alucard performs a short circular slash around himself. Its low cooldown makes it the priority damage skill and a frequent Pursuit trigger.

Whirling Smash in-game demonstration

Use it when

targets are already in melee range or you need a fast trigger for the next passive dash

Why it works

the area hit, short cooldown, and passive reset keep damage flowing through a skirmish

Do not

Do not cast outside melee range just to chase; hold it until the hit and the dash can both connect

Fission Wave skill iconFission Wave

The passive grants Hybrid Lifesteal. The first cast slows enemies, reduces Hybrid Defense, grants Alucard Hybrid Defense per enemy hero hit, and cuts his other cooldowns; the second cast releases a damaging shockwave.

Fission Wave in-game demonstration
Fission Wave replay captured from the English client on August 3, 2026.
Use it when

the fight is committed and you can tag one or more heroes before cycling the basic combo

Why it works

defense reduction, added durability, lifesteal, and shorter cooldowns create Alucard's strongest sustain window

Do not

Do not fire the second cast early when the first window is still generating safer skill cycles

Alucard Skill Priority and Combos

Skill upgrade priority

Take Whirling Smash at level 1 and prioritize Skill 2, use Groundsplitter as the backup upgrade, and level Fission Wave whenever available. Whirling Smash offers the shortest repeatable damage cycle, while Groundsplitter keeps most of its value as mobility and slow even before every rank is added.

Teamfight combo

Fission Wave combo stepFission WaveBasic Attack combo stepBasic AttackGroundsplitter combo stepGroundsplitterBasic Attack combo stepBasic AttackWhirling Smash combo stepWhirling SmashBasic Attack combo stepBasic AttackFission Wave combo stepFission Wave

Order: Fission Wave → Basic Attack → Groundsplitter → Basic Attack → Whirling Smash → Basic Attack → Fission Wave again. Why: the first ultimate cast creates the sustain and cooldown window, while each Basic Attack consumes Pursuit before the next skill refreshes it. Do not: fire the second Fission Wave immediately if the longer sustain window is still more valuable.

Laning and short-pick combo

Groundsplitter combo stepGroundsplitterBasic Attack combo stepBasic AttackWhirling Smash combo stepWhirling SmashBasic Attack combo stepBasic Attack

Order: Groundsplitter → Basic Attack → Whirling Smash → Basic Attack. Groundsplitter closes and slows, the first passive dash holds contact, then Whirling Smash creates another empowered Basic Attack. Do not: use both mobility tools only to reach a target that is already under safe turret or teammate protection.

How to Play Alucard by Game Phase

Early game

Clear efficiently, reach level four, and preserve Retribution for the objective window. Use Groundsplitter across terrain only when the landing area is safe. Do not force a lane chase that delays Turtle or exposes the opposite jungle.

Mid game

Approach from a side angle after allied control begins. Activate Fission Wave on heroes, then weave Pursuit attacks through the fight. Why: entering second reduces the chance that every control skill is saved for Alucard.

Late game

Track suppression, anti-heal, resurrection, and armor before diving. One missed Basic Attack weave lowers both damage and healing. Do not start on a protected tank when a controlled path to the back line will appear a second later.

Five Alucard Mistakes That Lose Fights

  1. Dumping skills without Pursuit attacks. Every unused empowered Basic Attack throws away damage and a dash.
  2. Starting the fight first. Alucard sustains after contact; he does not enjoy absorbing every control spell before Fission Wave is active.
  3. Recasting Fission Wave too early. The shockwave is valuable, but the first cast's defense, lifesteal, and cooldown window often matters longer.
  4. Copying six damage items into every draft. Queen's Wings or another survival answer may be the only reason sustain begins.
  5. Using Retribution before an objective contest. Fast farming is not worth losing the secure tool for Turtle or Lord.

Best Alucard Emblem and Battle Spell

Default jungle route

Assassin Emblem: Thrill, Seasoned Hunter, Temporal Reign. Battle Spell: Retribution, upgraded to Flame Retribution.

Use it when

Alucard is assigned jungle and must reach level four, contest objectives, and maintain skill uptime

Why it works

adaptive offense and movement speed up the clear; Seasoned Hunter supports Turtle and Lord; Temporal Reign compresses cooldowns after the ultimate

Do not

Do not spend Retribution on a low-value camp immediately before an objective

Lane sustain alternative

Fighter Emblem: Firmness, Festival of Blood, Brave Smite. Battle Spell: Vengeance.

Use it when

the draft needs a sturdier side-lane second entry rather than a dedicated jungler

Why it works

defense and extra sustain improve the counterturn once Alucard is in melee range

Do not

Do not take the lane route when your team expects Alucard to secure jungle objectives

Current Alucard Pro Setups

The top-five snapshot is unusually stable. Ranks 1 and 2 use the same six-item order. Rank 3 simply buys Flame Hunter's Tough Boots before War Axe. Rank 4 moves Malefic Roar to the second slot for earlier penetration, while rank 5 opens Hunter Strike for an earlier burst-and-chase spike. Copy the role of each item, not only the exact order.

Alucard Counters and Team Synergy

Squishy targets Alucard can chase

Harley hero iconAamon hero iconSun hero icon

Harley and Aamon depend on movement, timing, and short defensive windows rather than standing through repeated melee hits. Sun's clones can also feed area hits and sustain if Alucard identifies the real target. Enter after their escape or concealment tool is committed, then keep Pursuit available to reconnect.

Control and durability to respect

Franco hero iconJohnson hero iconFredrinn hero icon

Franco can suppress Alucard through the healing window, Johnson can chain long control after an impact, and Fredrinn can survive the first burst while returning heavy control and damage. Do not dive first; wait for the key control or change targets.

Control partners

Gatotkaca hero iconXavier hero iconTigreal hero icon

Gatotkaca, Xavier, and Tigreal create the stable target area Alucard lacks. When they hold several enemies, Alucard can tag multiple heroes with Fission Wave, gain more Hybrid Defense, and begin the full skill-to-Basic-Attack cycle. Do not enter before their control reaches the intended target.

Alucard Story

Alucard lost his father during the Moniyan war and survived demon captivity before joining the Monastery of Light. He later learned that powerful figures had hidden the truth about the Second Regiment. Unable to forgive either the Empire or the church, he chose an independent path, hunting demons across the Land of Dawn while searching for clues about his father and hiding the unstable power in his demonic right hand.

Alucard FAQ

What is Alucard's best build?

War Axe, Flame Hunter's Tough Boots, Endless Battle, Blade of Despair, Queen's Wings, and Malefic Roar form the dominant top-five client pattern. Move Malefic Roar earlier against armor or open Hunter Strike when an earlier chase spike matters.

What is Alucard's best Emblem?

For jungle, use Assassin Emblem with Thrill, Seasoned Hunter, and Temporal Reign. Fighter Emblem with Firmness, Festival of Blood, and Brave Smite is a sturdier lane alternative.

What Battle Spell should Alucard use?

Use Retribution in jungle and upgrade it to Flame Retribution. Vengeance is a lane alternative when surviving the counterturn matters more than objective securing.

What is Alucard's combo?

Start a full fight with Fission Wave, then alternate Basic Attacks with Groundsplitter and Whirling Smash before recasting Fission Wave. The short combo is Groundsplitter, Basic Attack, Whirling Smash, Basic Attack.

Who counters Alucard?

Suppression and durable control are the clearest problems. Franco, Johnson, and Fredrinn can stop or outlast Alucard before his lifesteal cycle takes control.

Is Alucard good for beginners?

His abilities are direct, but strong play still requires patience, objective timing, target selection, Basic Attack weaving, and entering after enemy control has been spent.

Verdict: Is Alucard Worth Learning?

Yes, if you want a melee jungler who rewards timing and rhythm more than long mechanical sequences. Alucard teaches a valuable rule: sustain starts only after safe contact. Let allied control open the fight, activate Fission Wave on heroes, weave every Pursuit attack, and adapt the final items to the control and armor actually facing you.
