Ling is a high-mobility Assassin who farms from wall routes, reaches the enemy back line from unusual angles, and turns Tempest of Blades into four Defiant Sword resets. Pick him when your team can give him jungle economy and delay key crowd control. Avoid him when the draft cannot protect his blue-buff access or the enemy has several reliable ways to knock him off walls and burst him before the Sword Field opens.
Ling is listed in-game as an Assassin with Chase/Burst. His durability bar is modest, but the real defense is route choice: walls shorten rotations, delay ground-targeted answers, and let him enter after control has been spent. The base-stat panel also shows a 100-point Energy pool, called Lightness Points in his skills, with a low ground regeneration rate that makes walls and blue buff especially important.

Passive / Buff
Ling restores extra Lightness Points while standing on a wall and whenever he deals damage. He gains 1.6 times the Critical Chance from other sources, but his Critical Damage is fixed at a lower base than most heroes.

Use it well: Treat the wall as both a route and a resource station. Pause on safe walls before a contest, then enter with enough Lightness Points to complete the landing, ultimate, and sword pickups.
Avoid: Do not start a deep dive with a nearly empty resource bar. Reaching the target is not enough if Defiant Sword cannot be reset through the full exit path.

Skill 1 / Mobility / Buff
Its passive adds Critical Chance. The active leap places Ling on a wall in Half-Stealth, improves Lightness recovery, and grants Movement Speed. Wall-to-wall jumps refresh Half-Stealth without triggering the normal cooldown, while control knocks him down and applies a slow.

Use it well: Approach from a wall that preserves two exits: one toward the target and one toward safety or the next jungle camp. Recheck enemy control before crossing open space.
Avoid: Do not sit on the most obvious wall while the enemy still has point-and-click control. Half-Stealth is positioning help, not immunity.

Skill 2 / Damage / Mobility
Ling dashes and stabs nearby enemies for Physical Damage. From a wall, he dives to the target location, damages and slows the area, and spends no Lightness Points. The strike counts as a Basic Attack, so critical, lifesteal, and attack-effect choices directly matter.

Use it well: Land slightly beyond a carry when possible so the next Basic Attack and ultimate follow the escape route. During the Sword Field, aim each reset toward a Tempest Blade instead of dashing randomly.
Avoid: Do not burn the dash only for poke when the enemy can immediately answer with control. Keep one route to a wall, sword, or safe teammate.

Ultimate / Burst / CC
Ling leaps into the air, becomes invincible, gains Movement Speed, ignores obstacles, then lands with area Physical Damage and a slow. Enemies in the center are knocked airborne. Four blades remain on the Sword Field; touching one reduces Finch Poise's cooldown, resets Defiant Sword, and restores Lightness Points.

Use it well: Cast after the target spends its cleanest control or when the center knock-up can protect a key objective. Plan the order of the four blades before landing so every reset moves toward the next useful angle.
Avoid: Do not treat the ultimate as damage only. If the fight is losing, its invulnerability and sword resets are often more valuable as a route out.
Learn Defiant Sword at level 1 and prioritize it, with Finch Poise as the secondary upgrade. Level Tempest of Blades whenever available. This matches the official priority: Defiant Sword is the clear, landing damage, chase tool, and repeated reset inside the ultimate. Finch Poise is essential for access, but extra points do less for Ling's immediate farming and finishing speed than his main damage skill.
Use the Custom Assassin Emblem for Adaptive Penetration, Adaptive Attack, and Movement Speed. Fatal strengthens the critical plan that already runs through Ling's passive, Berserker's Fury, and Haas' Claws. Seasoned Hunter improves jungle and objective tempo, so it belongs only to the team's actual Retribution user. The current in-game setup finishes with War Cry, rewarding the separate attacks and skills Ling strings together through a full blade-reset sequence.
Killing Spree is the main alternative when the draft is about one takedown and immediate repositioning rather than a longer damage chain. Take Retribution in Jungle. Ice Retribution is the safer default against mobile carries because the speed swing helps both pursuit and escape. Flame Retribution is reasonable when teammates already supply control and Ling needs a stronger isolated damage trade. Do not copy a jungle talent or spell page into a lane plan; the resource and objective assumptions are different.

Use the item notes below to decide what each slot contributes. The table describes each item independently of the numbered builds.
| Item | What it adds | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
Tough Boots | 40 Movement Speed and 18 Magic Defense, plus 25% shorter crowd-control and slow duration; the jungle blessing adds the Hunter effect. | Keep them when magic burst or reliable control can stop the wall entry. Sell or replace boots only in a planned late-game swap when the movement and control reduction are no longer the safer choice. |
Berserker's Fury | 60 Physical Attack, 25% Critical Chance, and 30% Critical Damage; critical Basic Attacks add True Damage through Doom. | Build early because Ling converts Critical Chance efficiently and Defiant Sword counts as a Basic Attack. Delay it only if the first objective requires an emergency survival component. |
Haas' Claws | 40 Physical Attack, 15% Attack Speed, 20% Critical Chance, and 20% Lifesteal; critical strikes briefly increase Attack Speed. | Pair it with Berserker's Fury when critical consistency and lifesteal let Ling clear, duel, and recover between wall rotations. Skip an early copy only when anti-heal and burst make sustain unreliable. |
Endless Battle | 60 Physical Attack, 250 HP, cooldown reduction, Movement Speed, and Mana Regen; Divine Justice adds a post-skill True Damage hit and recovery. | Buy when repeated skill-to-attack cycles decide the fight. It is strongest when Ling can trigger Divine Justice between dashes instead of dumping every spell at once. |
Malefic Roar | 60 Physical Attack and 30% Physical Penetration, with additional penetration against higher Physical Defense. | Add when front liners or defensive items are preventing clean finishes. Against a fragile draft with little armor, Blade of Despair or a defensive slot can have greater immediate value. |
Blade of Despair | 160 Physical Attack and 5% Movement Speed; damaging a low-HP non-minion target temporarily raises Physical Attack. | Use as the main raw-damage spike when Ling can reach low-HP targets safely. Delay it for Rose Gold Meteor when magic burst can erase him before the second dash. |
Rose Gold Meteor | Physical Attack, Attack Speed, and Lifesteal, plus stacking Hybrid Defense and a low-HP shield with temporary Movement Speed. | Choose when the dive must survive mixed or magic damage long enough to reach the Sword Field. Replace it with Malefic Roar only when armor, not survival, is the actual limit. |

Finch Poise → Defiant Sword → Basic Attacks → Tempest of Blades → Defiant Sword resets. Enter from a side wall, land behind or beside the target, and attack only long enough to draw the key response. Use the ultimate to pass through that response, then track the target while airborne. The first blade should move Ling toward the next useful blade, not simply the closest marker. Continue only while the route still ends on a wall, ally, or safe side of the fight.

Finch Poise → Defiant Sword → Basic Attacks → Defiant Sword. This shorter pattern is useful before level four, when punishing a side lane, or when the ultimate must stay available for an objective fight. Land after the enemy spends a dash, use the slow to secure the Basic Attacks, and save enough Lightness to return to terrain instead of walking through the enemy front line.

Layla and Hanabi are dangerous if protected, but their limited escape options make side-wall access valuable. Enter after their peel moves, not through the front of the formation.

Eudora and Jawhead can hold direct control and burst for the landing. Track their position before leaving a wall and use the ultimate to avoid the key answer rather than starting with it blindly.

Angela and Khufra supply protection or crowd control that makes Ling's second dash safer. Their pressure can also force enemies to group where the Sword Field has more value.

Hayabusa competes for the same assassin economy and offers little front-line control for Ling. Avoid stacking two resource-hungry flankers unless the rest of the draft already solves engage and protection.

Ling grew up inside the secretive Finch Sect and longed for freedom beyond its rules. A mission connected him with the Vermilion Bird, whose power repeatedly saved him as rivalries around the Dragon Altar drew in Zilong, Baxia, and Yu Zhong. When the bird made its final sacrifice, Ling survived with blue flame and a new identity: the Cyan Finch, carrying both the burden of the sect and the freedom he had chased.
The shared core in the current five builds is Berserker's Fury, Haas' Claws, and Endless Battle. Add Blade of Despair for raw finishing power, Malefic Roar against Physical Defense, and Rose Gold Meteor when surviving magic or mixed burst is the bigger problem.
Use Custom Assassin Emblem with Fatal, Seasoned Hunter, and War Cry for the observed sustained-damage jungle setup. Killing Spree is the alternative when post-takedown healing and Movement Speed are more useful than damage that builds through a longer sequence.
Ice Retribution is the reliable default against mobile carries because it creates a Movement Speed swing. Flame Retribution is an option when the team already has enough control and Ling needs to win one isolated damage trade quickly.
His wall movement and repeated Defiant Sword casts depend on Lightness Points. Blue buff makes those routes and extended Sword Field sequences much more forgiving, so losing it changes where and how aggressively Ling can enter.
Reliable single-target crowd control and fast burst are the clearest answers. Eudora and Jawhead punish predictable landings, while any draft that can deny blue-buff access reduces the number of safe wall routes Ling can take.
Pick Ling when the team can protect his jungle economy and create time for a delayed flank. The consistent version is not the first hero into every fight: recover Lightness, approach from a wall with two exits, force or wait out control, and turn Tempest of Blades into a planned chain of resets. Build enough survival to finish the route, then use critical damage and penetration to convert mobility into a clean back-line takedown.
