Clash of Clans Ranked Battles are the competitive side of Home Village multiplayer. They unlock at Town Hall 7, use a limited number of attacks, and place players into league tournaments where attack and defense trophies determine whether they move up, stay in place or move down. Regular Battles remain available for unlimited farming, events and practice without risking Ranked standing.

The most important planning detail is that each Ranked league has its own attack allowance and promotion bracket. A Skeleton player receives six attacks per tournament week, while an Electro player receives eighteen. Legend III and II have larger weekly allowances, and Legend I uses eight attacks per day. Clan War Leagues are a separate clan competition and do not determine a player’s Ranked league.

Quick answer: Enter Ranked when you are ready to commit to the tournament’s attack allowance and use a defensive layout that will remain suitable for that tournament. Each attack or defense is worth up to 40 trophies. Your final position inside the league group determines promotion, retention or demotion. Check the live Ranked menu before signing up because league brackets, start times and modifiers can change.

Battle, Ranked Battle, Legend League and CWL are different systems

Players often use “league” for several unrelated parts of Clash of Clans. Keeping the systems separate prevents the most common planning mistake: preparing for one mode while expecting progress in another.

Mode Main purpose Attack availability Trophies or standings Key planning point
Regular Battle Farming, events and practice Unlimited Does not change Ranked League standing Use it to test armies and collect resources without spending Ranked attacks
Ranked Battle Individual competitive progression Limited by current Ranked league Attack and defense trophies determine tournament position Sign up with a valid army and a prepared defensive layout
Legend League The top three Ranked tiers Legend III: 24/week; Legend II: 30/week; Legend I: 8/day Uses Legend-specific progression and demotion rules Read the rule for the exact Legend tier instead of treating all Legend play alike
Clan War League Clan competition Determined by the CWL war schedule and roster Clan stars, destruction and group standings CWL league placement does not replace an individual player’s Ranked league

Supercell describes regular Battles as the casual mode: players can raid for loot, participate in events and practice as often as they want. Ranked is the competitive mode, with a limited number of weekly attacks and a separate defensive layout.

How a Ranked tournament works

For most Ranked leagues, the basic loop is:

  1. Sign up for the tournament. Your current Ranked league determines the group and rule set.
  2. Confirm the defensive layout. Supercell says the layout is snapshotted when the player is placed into a league group on Monday. With auto sign-up enabled, that placement can happen at the start of Monday.
  3. Use the available attacks. The allowance ranges from six per week in the earliest leagues to eighteen in Electro, then rises in Legend III and II. Legend I follows a daily format.
  4. Earn attack and defense trophies. Both sides contribute to the player’s position on the group leaderboard.
  5. Finish inside the relevant bracket. At the next tournament transition, the leaderboard position determines promotion, retention or demotion.

Layout timing matters. Changes made after placement into the group do not affect that tournament. If you want to change the Ranked defense on Monday, finish the layout first and then sign up manually. Changes made later apply to the following tournament or, in Legend I, the following League Day.

Current Ranked league table

The following table reproduces the fields in Supercell’s Ranked Leagues support table as reviewed on October 9, 2026. A range such as “40–50%” means the live promotion share can vary inside that published range; it is not a prediction of an individual player’s odds.

League group Battles Max attack trophies Max defense trophies Group / minimum size Promotion bracket Demotion bracket
Skeleton 1–3 6/week 240 240 100 / 15 50% 0–5%

Titan 25–27 12/week 480 480 100 / 30 30–50% 15%
Dragon 28–30 14/week 560 560 100 / 40 25–30% 15%
Electro 31–33 18/week 720 720 100 / 50 15–20% 15%
Legend III 24/week 960 960 100 / 100 5% 15%
Legend II 30/week 1,200 1,200 100 / 100 3% 15%
Legend I 56/week (8/day) 320/day 320/day 100 / 100 Not applicable Below global rank 10,000

Higher leagues also improve league-related bonuses, but that does not make an incomplete attack schedule worthwhile by itself. Before signing up, compare the allowance with the number of attacks you can realistically complete that week.

How Ranked trophies are calculated

Supercell’s current support rule gives every attack or defense a maximum value of 40 trophies. Attack trophies depend on stars and destruction:

Attack result Attack trophies
3-star victory 40
2-star victory 16–32, based on destruction percentage
1-star victory 5–15, based on destruction percentage
0-star defeat 0–4, based on destruction percentage

Defense completes the same 40-trophy allocation. If the attacker earns fewer than 40, the defender receives the remainder. For example, an attacker who earns 28 trophies leaves 12 defense trophies. Defenders do not lose trophies under this system.

These values explain the scoring mechanism, not the difficulty of a particular match. Supercell says Ranked matchmaking attempts to find opponents with a similar Town Hall level and then uses league placement within that Town Hall range. The published support material does not reveal a complete hidden matchmaking formula, so claims about engineered win streaks or guaranteed opponent patterns should be treated as speculation.

Promotion, demotion and inactivity

Promotion and demotion are leaderboard outcomes, not a fixed personal trophy target that works in every group. A player’s position is evaluated against the published bracket for the current league. Because group size can have a minimum and promotion brackets sometimes appear as a range, the Ranked menu and live leaderboard are the final operational reference for that tournament.

Inactivity has a separate rule. Supercell defines an inactive week as a tournament week in which the player does not sign up. After four inactive tournament weeks, demotion occurs at the beginning of the following tournament week. Continued inactivity causes another one-rank drop for every additional four-week period until the player reaches the Town Hall floor. Further inactivity at that floor can make the player unranked.

This is different from signing up and performing poorly. If you know you cannot play a tournament, check the inactivity warning and your Town Hall floor rather than assuming that skipping one week immediately removes a full rank.

What changes in Legend League

Legend League now has three tiers, and their schedules are not identical:

  • Legend III: weekly tournament, 24 battles, with the top five players in each group promoted under the April 2026 structure.

  • Legend II: weekly tournament, 30 battles, with the top three promoted.
  • Legend I: four-week tournament structure, eight battles per day and a weekly demotion check for players below global rank 10,000.

Supercell also applies tier-specific battle modifiers in Legend. Those modifiers can be changed by balance updates, so a general Ranked guide should not freeze every modifier value into long-lived strategic advice. Consult the live tier information before choosing an army or defense for a new tournament.

Ranked preparation checklist

Use this checklist before signing up:

  • Confirm that the army recipe contains no temporary troops. Supercell states that temporary troops cannot be used in Ranked; an attack can begin without them if the recipe is not corrected.
  • Make sure the current army is not empty before entering the mode.
  • Finish the defensive layout before placement into the tournament group.
  • Read the attack allowance for the exact league instead of assuming every tier has the same schedule.
  • Check when the tournament opens and ends in the game, especially around an update or time-zone change.
  • Plan hero and pet upgrades around the attacks you intend to complete.
  • Review the leaderboard before the closing period; promotion and demotion depend on group position.

Do not spend a Ranked attack solely to test whether an unfamiliar composition works. Regular Battles provide unlimited practice without changing Ranked standing.

Common Ranked mistakes

Confusing Ranked with CWL. Ranked is individual multiplayer progression; CWL is a clan war competition with its own roster and league table.

Editing the base after sign-up. The new layout may not appear until the following tournament or League Day.

Leaving temporary troops in a saved army. The attack can proceed without the unavailable units, changing the intended composition.

Assuming trophies can be lost on defense. Under the published system, defense awards the trophies the attacker did not earn from the 40-trophy total.

Treating a promotion percentage as a personal probability. It describes the leaderboard bracket, not the likelihood that a particular player will finish there.

FAQ

What Town Hall unlocks Ranked Battles?

Ranked Battles unlock at Town Hall 7. Regular Battles are available earlier and remain the unlimited farming and practice mode.

How many Ranked attacks do I get each week?

It depends on the league. The current table ranges from six weekly attacks in Skeleton and Barbarian to eighteen in Electro. Legend III has 24, Legend II has 30, and Legend I uses eight per day.

Can I lose trophies on defense?

No. Each attack and defense pair is worth up to 40 trophies. The attacker receives trophies based on stars and destruction, and the defender receives the remainder.

Does Clan War League affect my Ranked league?

No. CWL is a separate clan competition. Your Ranked league comes from individual Ranked tournament results.

Can I change my defensive layout after signing up?

You can edit it, but changes made after placement into the tournament group apply to the next tournament. In Legend I, they apply to the following League Day.

What happens if I skip Ranked for several weeks?

Four tournament weeks without signing up trigger an inactivity demotion at the next tournament transition. Continued inactivity can cause further four-week rank drops down to the Town Hall floor and eventually unranked status.

Continue your Clash of Clans planning

Ranked rewards preparation and consistency more than last-minute spending. Practice armies in regular Battles, lock the correct defense before sign-up, and use the live leaderboard to judge the closing bracket.
