Genshin Impact 7.1 Phase 1 asks a better question than “DPS or support?” Vesna and Vodyanitsa both serve the new Stellar Swirl ecosystem, but they do not have equal value outside it. Vesna is the on-field Anemo carry who turns Cryo Swirls into the team’s main damage plan. Vodyanitsa is the off-field Hydro support who adds healing, interruption resistance, resistance reduction, and buffs that also reach selected Freeze teams.

The correct pull depends on the other three slots. If you cannot write down those slots before wishing, the banner is selling you a future team rather than an immediate upgrade.

Quick answer: Pull Vesna when you want a new Stellar Swirl carry and already have strong off-field Cryo—Odette or Cryo Traveler are the most important starting points. Pull Vodyanitsa when you already own Vesna/Mizuki for Stellar Swirl, or Skirk plus Cryo/Hydro partners for Freeze. If your account has neither a Stellar Swirl core nor a compatible Freeze carry, save. For most accounts, one C0 character plus existing teammates is better than forcing Vesna and Vodyanitsa as a two-limited package.

What a complete Vesna team needs

Vesna’s damage plan starts with Cryo application. At least one teammate must apply Cryo from off field so her Anemo attacks can repeatedly trigger Cryo Swirl and convert it into Stellar Swirl. A second Anemo can improve application or buffs, while the final slot covers sustain or another reaction-specific bonus.

Premium: Vesna + Vodyanitsa + Faruzan + Odette

Odette supplies sustained off-field Cryo and Stellar bonuses. Faruzan contributes Anemo-focused support, especially at C6. Vodyanitsa covers sustain and adds Anemo RES reduction plus Stellar Swirl damage support. This is powerful, but it also contains several high-value or limited pieces; do not use it as the minimum standard for whether Vesna works.

Balanced: Vesna + Cryo Traveler + Vodyanitsa + Odette

Cryo Traveler is free and contributes meaningful off-field reaction damage. The double-Cryo back line makes aura maintenance easier, while Vodyanitsa keeps the team alive. This is the most useful template for checking whether Vodyanitsa’s comfort is worth a second limited pull.

Lower cost: Vesna + Cryo Traveler + Sucrose + Diona

Sucrose shares Elemental Mastery and provides more Anemo application; Diona supplies Cryo, shielding, and healing. The ceiling is lower, but the team proves Vesna can start with accessible pieces. If this lineup feels smooth in live testing, upgrade individual slots later instead of buying the whole premium core at once.

How Vesna’s rotation should flow

  1. Apply long-duration Cryo from Odette, Cryo Traveler, or another off-field unit.
  2. Activate support buffs and resistance reduction before Vesna takes the field.
  3. Use Vesna’s Skill to enter the enhanced state.
  4. Trigger the special Skill, then use Normal and Charged Attacks to recharge it.
  5. Cast the special Skill whenever ready instead of delaying it for a visually cleaner combo.
  6. Finish with Burst and any final special Skill before buffs expire, then restart with Cryo application.

The common failure point is applying Hydro too early and consuming the Cryo aura before Vesna can Swirl it. Freeze may still be useful, but watch whether the actual rotation produces enough Cryo Swirls rather than assuming every Cryo/Hydro/Anemo combination is equivalent.

How to build Vesna before final release

  • Artifact direction: 4-piece Scarlet Proof is designed around triggering Stellar Swirl and improving its CRIT profile.
  • Main stats: ATK% Sands, ATK% Goblet, and CRIT Rate or CRIT DMG Circlet are the current starting point.
  • Why no Anemo Goblet: Stellar Swirl follows the newer reaction formula and is not buffed like ordinary Anemo talent damage. An ATK% Goblet supports the reaction output more directly.
  • Substats: balance CRIT, ATK%, and enough Energy Recharge for the final rotation; Elemental Mastery remains useful but should not replace the stats her reaction formula actually scales.

The dedicated Vesna build guide can own exact weapon and artifact rankings after live data arrives; this banner guide should decide whether your roster can field her.

Where Vodyanitsa is genuinely valuable

Vodyanitsa becomes valuable only after a target team is visible. These four characters represent the two practical destinations in the current comparison: Stellar Swirl drivers and the Cryo/Hydro Freeze core.

Stellar Swirl support

Vodyanitsa’s best case is a Vesna team where one slot must provide sustain without abandoning damage. Her current package combines healing, interruption resistance, Anemo/Cryo/Hydro resistance reduction, and a direct Stellar Swirl bonus. That role compression lets the remaining two characters focus on Cryo application and damage.

Skirk Freeze alternative

In Skirk teams, Vodyanitsa can fill the fourth slot beside Furina and Escoffier or replace a missing support depending on the account. She buffs the right elements and remains within Skirk’s Cryo/Hydro restriction. Community discussion, however, treats her as an improvement rather than the piece that makes Skirk functional; Escoffier usually changes the team more.

Mizuki Stellar Swirl

Mizuki can use the same Anemo RES reduction and reaction buffs, but both her team architecture and field time must be checked. Vodyanitsa is more attractive when the account already owns the Cryo Linchpin needed to enable Stellar Swirl rather than expecting Hydro support to create the reaction by itself.

Vodyanitsa build and rotation priorities

Current team testing treats Vodyanitsa as an HP-scaling off-field support. Start with enough Energy Recharge to Burst on the schedule your team needs, then add HP% and Healing Bonus or more HP. Tenacity of the Millelith is an early general-support option when its trigger is reliable. Her signature should compete with energy and team-utility catalysts, not be assumed mandatory.

A provisional premium sequence is: Odette Skill twice → Cryo Traveler Skill, Charged Attack, and Burst → Vodyanitsa Skill → Vesna enhanced-state combo. The exact order can change after particle timings are finalized, but the principle is stable: place Cryo before Vesna and keep Vodyanitsa’s setup short.

Pull order for low spenders

  1. Secure the C0 character that completes an existing team.
  2. Run the trial with your real control setup and note whether the rotation feels cramped.
  3. Use accessible weapons and mixed artifacts before farming a perfect new set.
  4. Add the second character only if the four-person team is the account’s main project.
  5. Evaluate constellations and signatures after post-release calculations, not before both team roles are covered.

If Phase 2 is also attractive, compare it with the Skirk build guide before spending.

Phase 1 banner FAQ

Is Vesna a main DPS?

Yes in current pre-release testing: she is an on-field Anemo Stellar Swirl damage dealer who also enables the reaction.

Does Vesna need Vodyanitsa?

No. Vodyanitsa is a premium sustain/support option, but Cryo Traveler, Odette, Sucrose, Faruzan, Diona, and other partners can build functional alternatives.

Is Vodyanitsa only for Vesna?

No. She can support compatible Skirk Freeze and Mizuki Stellar Swirl teams, though her value remains concentrated in Cryo/Hydro/Anemo reaction shells.

What is the most important Vesna teammate?

A reliable off-field Cryo applier. Odette and Cryo Traveler are the strongest starting points because the team cannot trigger Cryo-based Stellar Swirl without that aura.

Should I pull both Phase 1 characters?

Only when you want the Vesna team specifically and can still fill the two Cryo/Anemo support slots. Do not buy both before confirming the live rotation.

Bottom line

Vesna creates the Stellar Swirl team; Vodyanitsa makes selected Stellar Swirl and Freeze teams smoother. Pull the missing function, not the matching banner art. Vesna is the better first target for an account with Cryo application and no driver, while Vodyanitsa is the better upgrade for an account that already owns the carry she is meant to support.
